Mahakulung is an ancestral domain of indigenous Kulung people in the southern suburb of Mt. Everest. The present Mahakulung Rural Municipality with an area of 648.05 square kilometers was named after the greater Kulung-Mahakulung. More than 15000 people live here today belonging to different communities; Sherpa, Dalit, and Chhetri apart from majority Kulung.
